Sarah McQuaid

Maple Street Chapel, 200 S Main Street, Lombard, IL 60148

“The precision and sophistication of the writing and playing blows me away. I am so glad to be involved,” writes guitar legend Michael Chapman in his introduction to Sarah McQuaid’s fifth solo album If We Dig Any Deeper It Could Get Dangerous – which he offered to produce after meeting Sarah at a festival where they were both on the bill.

Recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Ards International Guitar Festival in Northern Ireland, Sarah’s also drawn critical praise for her voice (which has been variously likened to malt whiskey and melted chocolate) and her engaging rapport with audiences: “I’ve attended hundreds of concerts of all kinds, and her subtle mastery onstage launches her straight into my fave shows ever,” wrote The Huffington Post.

With the release of her new album, the Madrid-born, Chicago-raised, Cornwall-based singer/songwriter has expanded her battery of instruments to include piano, electric guitar and drum, and it’s drawn critical raves internationally: Dutch music magazine Heaven hailed it as “an early contender for folk album of 2018,” the UK’s fRoots said it was “a collection to savour” and the USA’s PopMatters called it “a gateway into a true innovator’s soul.”

One recording project turned into another and by the time the second recording was completed, Rusty joined the trio and they became BRIAR ROAD. Since that time they have performed at coffee houses, festivals, folk clubs, libraries and museums through out the Midwest. Using guitar, mandolin, ukulele, banjo and bass, along with their vocal harmonies, they create unique captivating arrangements of a wide variety of tunes ranging from traditional and contemporary folk and blues to jazz and swing standards including original songs by Dan and some of their songwriting pals. Their on stage presence has been described as spontaneous with quick witted humor.

Lee Murdock's Christmas Ship

Maple Street Chapel, 200 S Main Street, Lombard, IL 60148

Maple Street Concerts is pleased to present Lee Murdock on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 7:30 pm at the historic Maple Street Chapel in Lombard, Illinois. Lee will be kicking the holiday season with his Christmas Ship concert.

Lee Murdock has uncovered a boundless body of music and stories in the Great Lakes. Taking snapshots from history, his songs summon the listener to take a front-row seat, to look through the eyes and into the hearts of individuals who have shaped our heritage on and around the Great Lakes. His concerts invoke a sense of place, but it is a universal place, and a timeless repertoire that celebrates the North American people, their triumphs and tragedies, work songs and pastimes.

Noted as a fluent instrumentalist on six and twelve string guitars, Murdock combines ragtime, Irish, blues and folk styles with this flair for storytelling in songs. His musical influences span fifteen generations, and combine original compositions with traditional music.

There is an amazing timelessness in this music. Great Lakes songs are made of hard word, hard living, ships that go down and ships that come in.

The music is grounded in the work song tradition, from the rugged days of lumberjacks and wooden sailing schooners. Murdock comes alongside with ballads of contemporary commerce and revelry in the grand folk style. Lee’s fans have discovered a sweetwater treasure in his songs about the Great Lakes, finding drama and inspiration in the lives of sailors and fishermen, lighthouse keepers, ghosts, shipwrecks, outlaws and everyday heroes.

Tickets for this event are $20.

Anne Hills

Maple Street Chapel, 200 S Main Street, Lombard, IL 60148

Maple Street Concerts is pleased to present Anne Hills on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 7:30 pm at the historic Maple Street Chapel in Lombard, Illinois.

Anne Hills is one of the most beloved voices of the contemporary folk music scene, receiving awards and recognition for her live performances, her unique solo and collaborative recording projects, and her overall artistry and benefit work. Her song “Follow That Road” was the title cut of the Martha’s Vineyard Songwriter Retreat and has been a certified folk classic since the late 1990s. Whether she is singing her own songs, the words of six-year-old Opal Whiteley, or her song settings of the Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley; accompanied with her guitar, banjo, or simply a Tibetan bell, she puts her whole heart and soul into the moment. You won’t want to miss a chance to hear her songs and stories in person. She tours extensively, winning over audiences with her warm, lively and humorous performances. (And if you love her writing, be sure to check out her “Haiku a Day” shared via her Facebook page!) The AllMusic Guide says, “A stunning soprano tone has made Anne Hills one of contemporary music’s premiere vocalists … Her knack for writing heartfelt songs [has] brought her to the upper echelon of her craft.” and Tom Paxton says, “Anne Hills is such an exquisite singer that it’s understandable that people might be swept up in the pure beauty of her voice and thereby overlook her writing. That would be a mistake. For me, Anne’s writing, in songs like ‘Follow That Road’ and many others, is as direct, melodic and deep as any work being done today. She is quite simply one of my absolute favorite songwriters.” Hear more from Anne at: www.annehills.com.

Maple Street Concerts is pleased to present Katie Dahl on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at 7:30 pm at the historic Maple Street Chapel in Lombard, Illinois.

Singer-songwriter Katie Dahl has performed her original songs everywhere from the dusty cliffs of Mali, to the winding canals of southern France, to the cedar forests of the American northwoods. Though she’s particularly well-respected on her home turf of Door County, Wisconsin, Katie tours regularly and has earned accolades nationwide for the depth and power of her alto voice, the literate candor of her songs, and the easy humor of her live performances. In 2015, Katie’s song “Crowns” hit #1 on the Folk-DJ charts, and she was selected for Falcon Ridge Folk Festival’s prestigious Emerging Artists Showcase. Katie is also a playwright whose musical Victory Farm premiered to high acclaim in 2012 and has since been made into a live cast album. Karen Impola of Iowa Public Radio says, “Katie Dahl’s music combines a love for her rural midwestern roots, a droll wit, and a clear-eyed appraisal of modern life, all served up in a voice as rich as cream.”

C. Daniel Boling w/Anthony Padilla opening

Maple Street Chapel, 200 S Main Street, Lombard, IL 60148

Maple Street Concerts is pleased to present C. Daniel Boling on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at 7:30 pm at the historic Maple Street Chapel in Lombard, Illinois.

A 2014 Winner of the Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk songwriter contest, Daniel shares experiences from a life well-lived in places as far-ranging as Okinawa, Japan, and Padre Island, Texas. Daniel is a balladeer/songwriter and delights audiences with his well-crafted story songs coast-to-coast in over one hundred shows a year in house concerts, listening rooms, theatres and festivals. For three decades Daniel was a gun-toting Park Ranger and Criminal Investigator in National Parks and Public Lands throughout the west and he started touring fulltime at 50.

Daniel’s songs tell interesting stories about a variety of characters, including himself, played on guitar and banjitar (a banjo/guitar hybrid) with a deft fingerpicking style. His clear tenor draws positive comparisons to John Denver and Pete Seeger, and folks say there’s a lot of Steve Goodman in his delivery and storytelling. Other songwriting awards include 1st Place at Woody Guthrie Folk Festival, Walnut Valley Festival, Santa Fe Bluegrass and Old Time Festival, and Albuquerque Folk Festival. You can’t help but relate to Daniel’s songs!

Anthony Padilla will be opening.

Tickets for this show are $15.
